Padlet is the new brainstorming tool!

I found padlet to be a great technology tool for teachers and librarians. This site is a virtual blackboard that lets both students and teachers post their responses on a wall - virtual wall that is. For example, instead of doing a traditional brainstorming do now with chalk on a blackboard, padlet lets you do it in real time with students on its site! And students can also add images as well. Its like a virtual notebook that logs in all students responses. Very easy setup and interactive too.

Teachers and librarians can setup their space with bookmarked padlet website and encourage students to post on the wall. Its that simple!

I see padlet as the new "oaktag" paper presentation document that students would do in the 1980s, 1990s and even today. However no more visits to staples to buy oaktag paper needed. I don't necessarily know if that is a good thing. I love the feeling of oaktag paper, but now with padlet students can create boards, webpages and shared walls.  Goodbye staples oaktag...hello padlet.

I found hippocampus  to be a great technology tool in my social studies classroom.  It features high quality video on subjects such as the US Civil War that I can use to complement my lessons and expand my network of visual resources.  It keeps my students entertained with history, rather than thinking that history is boring. School librarians can utilize this technology tool in the library by creating a video multimedia tool in one part of the library.  Then having students watch relevant videos based on their classroom subject.  If students want to continue watching Hippo, they can or instead follow up with a book.  But at least Hippocampus can create interest in a particular topic, rather than students looking at book covers and pictures to spark up interest.  Don't judge a Hippo by its cover!

Are you taking Notes? Make it Notability!

I found Notability  to be a great new technology tool for the classroom to encourage notetaking in the 21rst century.  Taking notes with notability lets you not only takes notes, but also add pictures and make annotations to those notes.  I love teaching my students annotating skills in social studies to help them learn the material - notability lets you learn this skill at the same time.  And taking notes also includes adding pictures - thats fun! School librarians can utilize notability by having students take notes of their experiences in the library while they visit.  These notes can be referenced later on by the student and additional comments could be made later on for further visits.  Who knew taking notes would not involve a paper and pen?  It's notability time!

Penzu are you? It's Journal Time!

Teachers can do a world of benefit by having students write every class. This was once done by journals in English class - by pen and paper.  Penzu  is an online journal that not only lets students journal online, but gives them encouragement and examples on how to write. It is the new dear dairy...without the pen and paper. School librarians can utilize penzu by having students journal what books or resources they found interesting during their visit.  So students who visit the library can gain literacy by writing about their time spent.
